Start learning Dutch today:
Spoken by 25 million native speakers in the Netherlands (Nederland), Belgium (Vlaanderen / Flanders), and Suriname, Dutch (Nederlands) sits directly between English and German on the West Germanic family tree. For English speakers, Dutch is one of the most rewarding and transparent languages in the world—hundreds of everyday words look and sound like close cousins: het water (water), het brood (bread), de melk (milk), de appel (apple), het huis (house), het bed (bed), de vriend (friend), het boek (book).
Yet every learner of Dutch quickly discovers the #1 golden rule of Dutch grammar:
Never learn a Dutch noun without its definite article:
de(common gender) orhet(neuter gender)!
Whether you say een grote kamer or een groot huis, whether you point to deze stoel or dit boek, and whether a relative clause starts with die or dat depends 100% on whether the noun is a de-woord or a het-woord. When you master the 480 most important everyday Dutch words across 15 thematic flashcard decks (32 cards per deck)—always pairing each noun with de or het and a full example sentence—you build effortless accuracy from A1 to B2.
Essential Dutch Grammar & Pronunciation Rules to Master with Flashcards
1. The Golden Rule of De vs. Het Nouns (And Why Diminutives -je Are Always Het)
Dutch has two grammatical genders for singular nouns:
De-words (Common Gender — ~75% of all Dutch nouns): Includes almost all nouns referring to people and professions (de moeder, de vader, de leraar, de dokter, de buurman), most animals (de hond, de kat, de vogel), fruits, vegetables, trees, rivers, and words ending in-ing, -ij, -ie, -heid, -teit, -schap(de rekening, de bakkerij, de informatie).Het-words (Neuter Gender — ~25% of all Dutch nouns, but very high frequency!): Includes many core everyday words (het huis, het water, het brood, het kind, het meisje, het boek, het werk, het kantoor, het jaar, het vliegtuig, het station, het hotel, het ziekenhuis).- 4 Reliable Rules for
Hetvs.De:- All plural nouns take
de—even if the singular is a het-word! (het huis → de huizen, het kind → de kinderen, het boek → de boeken). - All diminutives ending in
-je(-tje, -pje, -etje, -kje) takehet! Thus de kop (the cup) becomes het kopje, de kaart becomes het kaartje (the ticket), and de meid becomes het meisje (the girl). - All verb infinitives used as nouns take
het(het eten = the food/eating, het leven = life), as do languages (het Nederlands), metals, and compass directions (het noorden). - How
devs.hetchanges adjectives & demonstratives:- Demonstratives: deze stoel (this chair) / die stoel (that chair) vs. dit huis (this house) / dat huis (that house).
- Adjective
-eending: Adjectives before a noun almost always add-e(de grote kamer, een grote kamer, het grote huis), EXCEPT before an indefinite singularhet-word with een / geen: een groot huis, een goed idee, een oud kasteel!
- All plural nouns take
2. Dutch V2 Word Order, Inversion & Verb-Final Subordinate Clauses
Watching the verb position in your flashcard example sentences will make Dutch syntax second nature:
- Main Clause V2 Rule (Verb in Position 2): In a standard statement, the conjugated verb is always the second grammatical element: Ik heb één kaartje voor vandaag.
- Inversion When Starting with Time or Place: If you put a time or place phrase first, the subject and verb invert so the verb stays in Position 2: Op dinsdag hebben we les (Literally: "On Tuesday have we class").
- Sentence Frame (Tangconstructie): When using a modal verb (kunnen, moeten, willen, mogen) or present perfect (hebben/zijn), the second verb goes to the very end of the clause: Ik wil morgen naar Amsterdam gaan | De badkamer is net schoongemaakt.
- Subordinate Clauses (Bijzinnen) Push All Verbs to the End: After subordinating conjunctions like omdat (because), dat (that), or als (if/when), the conjugated verb moves to the end: ...omdat ik vandaag thuis werk.
3. Separable Verbs (Scheidbare Werkwoorden): Opbellen, Meenemen, Opstaan
Like German, Dutch loves compound verbs with stressed prepositional prefixes (op-, aan-, uit-, mee-, af-, terug-) that split apart in the present tense and insert -ge- in the middle for the past participle:
- opstaan (to get up): Ik sta om zes uur op → Ik ben vroeg opgestaan.
- opbellen (to call up): Ik bel je morgen op → Ik heb haar opgebeld.
- meenemen (to take along): Neem je paspoort mee → Ik heb een paraplu meegenomen.
- schoonmaken (to clean): Wij maken het huis schoon → De kamer is schoongemaakt.
4. Mastering Dutch Vowel Digraphs (ui, ij/ei, eu, oe)
Dutch spelling is remarkably consistent once you know its signature two-letter vowel combinations:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Learning Dutch Vocabulary
How do I remember whether a Dutch noun takes de or het?
About 75% of Dutch nouns take de (and 100% of plural nouns take de). The smartest strategy is to treat the article as the first syllable of the word on every flashcard (het huis, de kamer, het boek, de tafel) and remember that all -je diminutives (het kaartje, het meisje, het kopje) and verb infinitives used as nouns (het eten) always take het.
What is the difference between Dutch in the Netherlands and Flemish in Belgium?
Both the Netherlands and Flanders share the exact same standard written language (Standaardnederlands). The difference is similar to British vs. American English: Belgian Dutch (Vlaams) has a softer pronunciation of g and ch, uses polite u / ge / gij slightly differently in speech, and occasionally prefers a regional synonym, while 99% of the 480 core words in these 15 decks are identical across Amsterdam, Utrecht, Antwerp, and Ghent.
Are these 15 Dutch flashcard decks suitable for the Inburgeringsexamen and Staatsexamen NT2?
