Start learning Swedish today:
Spoken by over 10.5 million people in Sweden (Sverige) and Finland—and mutually intelligible with Norwegian and Danish across Scandinavia—Swedish (svenska) is one of the most approachable, melodic, and rewarding languages an English speaker can learn.
Thanks to shared Germanic roots and centuries of Norse-English contact, hundreds of core Swedish words feel immediately familiar: ett hus (a house), en bok (a book), en katt (a cat), en hand (a hand), en son (a son), en syster (a sister), kaffe (coffee), mjölk (milk), vatten (water), grön (green), kall (cold), komma (to come). Even better, Swedish verbs do not conjugate by person or number—one single present-tense verb form works for I, you, he, she, we, and they!
However, to speak natural, accurate Swedish, there is one non-negotiable habit you must build from your very first flashcard:
Always learn every Swedish noun together with its indefinite article (
enorett) and its suffixed definite form (-en / -nvs.-et / -t)!
When you master the 480 most important everyday Swedish words across 15 thematic flashcard decks (32 cards per deck)—with every noun in Decks 2–12 explicitly marked with en or ett and paired with a natural example sentence—you build rock-solid Swedish fluency from A1 to B2.
5 Essential Keys to Mastering Swedish Vocabulary & Grammar with Flashcards
1. The #1 Rule: En (Common) vs. Ett (Neuter) & Suffixed Definite Articles
Swedish divides nouns into two grammatical genders—and instead of putting a separate word for "the" in front of the noun, Swedish attaches the article directly to the end of the noun as a suffix:
| Gender Category | Indefinite ("a / an") | Definite ("the" — Suffixed!) | Adjective Agreement (stor = big) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common Gender (Utrum — ~75% of nouns) | en stol (a chair)en kvinna (a woman)en bil (a car) |
stol**en** (the chair)kvinna** n** (the woman)bil** en** (the car) |
en stor stol / stolen är stor |
| Neuter Gender (Neutrum — ~25% of nouns) | ett hus (a house)ett äpple (an apple)ett barn (a child) |
hus**et** (the house)äppl** et** (the apple)barn** et** (the child) |
ett stort hus (+t) / huset är stort |
| Plural (Both Genders) | stolar / hus / äpplen | stolar**na** / hus**en** / äpple**na** |
stora stolar / stora hus (+a) |
- Why learning
envs.etton every flashcard matters:- It tells you whether "the" at the end of the noun is
-en / -n(en dag → dagen, en gata → gatan) or-et / -t(ett år → året, ett arbete → arbetet). - It tells you whether an adjective needs a
-tending in the singular (en varm kopp vs. ett varmt täcke; en ny bil vs. ett nytt jobb). - Bonus tip: When you put an adjective in front of a definite noun, Swedish uses Double Definiteness—both a front article (den / det / de) AND the suffixed article: den stora bilen (the big car), det röda huset (the red house)!
- It tells you whether "the" at the end of the noun is
2. Why Swedish Verb Conjugation Is a Dream for Learners
In Spanish, French, German, or Polish, you have to memorize 6 different verb endings for every tense. In Swedish, a verb has only ONE form per tense for all subjects (jag, du, han, hon, den, det, vi, ni, de)!
- Infinitive (att +
-aor stressed vowel): att tala (to speak), att läsa (to read), att bo (to live/reside), att vara (to be), att ha (to have). - Present Tense (
-ar,-er, or-rfor everyone!):- Jag talar svenska, du talar svenska, vi talar svenska, de talar svenska.
- Jag är redo, du är redo, vi är redo (är = am / is / are!).
- Jag har en bil, hon har en bil, vi har en bil (har = have / has!).
3. Swedish V2 Word Order (Verb Always in 2nd Place) & Inte Placement
Watch how our flashcard example sentences demonstrate the golden V2 Rule of Swedish main clauses:
- Standard Statement: Subject (1) + Verb (2): Jag vaknar klockan sex (I wake up at six o'clock).
- Fronted Time/Place Statement (Inversion!): When you start a sentence with a time or place expression (Position 1), the verb stays in Position 2 and the subject moves to Position 3:
- På fredag kväll går vi ut (Literally: "On Friday evening go we out").
- Idag är vädret soligt (Literally: "Today is the-weather sunny").
- Where to put
inte("not"): In main clauses, inte comes right after the conjugated verb (Jag förstår inte = I don't understand). In subordinate clauses (after att, eftersom, om, när), inte comes before the verb (the famous BIFF rule: ...eftersom jag inte förstår).
4. Mastering the 3 Swedish Vowels (å, ä, ö) & Soft Consonants (sj, sk, kj, tj)
In the Swedish alphabet, å, ä, ö are not accented versions of a and o—they are the last three distinct letters of the 29-letter alphabet (... X, Y, Z, Å, Ä, Ö):
| Swedish Letter / Combo | How to Pronounce It | Flashcard Examples from Our 15 Decks |

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Learning Swedish Vocabulary
How do I know if a Swedish noun is an en-word or an ett-word?
About 75% of all Swedish nouns are en-words (including almost all nouns referring to people, professions, animals, days, and seasons, plus nouns ending in -are, -ing, -het, -tion). Because the remaining 25% (ett-words like ett hus, ett rum, ett kök, ett bord, ett barn, ett äpple, ett tåg, ett år, ett kontor) are among the most common everyday words, always memorize the article and noun together (ett hus — huset, en stol — stolen) on your flashcards!
Why does Swedish attach "the" to the end of the noun?
Like Norwegian, Danish, and Icelandic, Swedish evolved its definite article from an old Norse demonstrative suffix attached directly to the noun: -en / -n for en-words (en bok → boken, en skola → skolan) and -et / -t for ett-words (ett hus → huset, ett äpple → äpplet). Seeing both the indefinite headword (en stol) and the definite form in the example sentence on our flashcards makes this pattern completely automatic.
