Translate Cards Locally with Downloadable M2M100

The desktop web app can now translate card text on your computer using M2M100 418M. Its optional download is about 668 MB, including the runtime and license notices. It supports 100 languages, but that does not include every language in the app: Telugu, for example, is not supported.

M2M100 is an open-source model distributed under the MIT license. The downloadable packs also include component notices.

Translation is an editing aid. It produces a draft for you to check, rather than automatically replacing a card's answer.

Install the translation pack

Open Settings and find Offline translation in the Language section. Select Download and wait for Downloaded. Downloads are available in supported desktop browsers.

You can also download the pack from the Translate card dialog if it is not installed yet. Use Cancel to stop a download or Remove download to delete an installed pack.

Translate one card

1. Open your set's card editor. The translation action is available in List, Grid, and Spreadsheet views.
2. Enter the text to translate in Term, then select that card's Translate action.
3. In Translate card, choose the source language under From and the destination language under To. Select two different supported languages.
4. Check Card text to make sure you are translating the intended prompt, then select Translate.
5. Read the Suggested translation. You can edit this text directly.
6. Select Use translation when the answer is empty, or Replace answer when the card already has an answer.
7. Use Save cards in the editor to save your card changes.

Closing the dialog without applying a suggestion leaves the answer unchanged. Replace answer replaces the existing definition, so preserve any wording you want to keep before applying it.

Give the model enough context

A short word can have several meanings. A translation of “bank” may refer to a financial institution or the side of a river. Add enough context to the term to express your intended meaning, or edit the suggestion into the precise answer you want to study.

Check names, grammar, gender, specialist vocabulary, and accents. For important or unfamiliar wording, compare the draft with a source you trust before putting it into your deck. Do not treat a fluent-looking answer as proof that it is correct.

The dialog accepts up to 1,200 input characters at a time. Split longer material into smaller cards. The first translation may take longer while the engine loads; later requests still depend on your computer and browser.

What stays on your computer?

Model translation runs locally: card text is not sent to a translation server. This is separate from any account syncing you use for the deck itself.

The cached engine can restart offline after installation. That does not guarantee offline access to the whole website or your decks. An app runtime update may need a connection on first use. Downloads are specific to the browser profile, and clearing site data can remove local app data and the model cache.
