A Web Language-Study Routine with Translation and Speech

Translation and speech solve different editing and study tasks. Translation can draft an answer; speech lets you hear card text. A useful web routine connects them with a manual review step so that an uncertain translation does not quietly become something you study.

Both downloadable models run on your computer in supported desktop browsers. They are optional and separate: M2M100 translation is about 668 MB, and MOSS speech is about 733 MB. You can use translation with device voices, or downloaded voices with answers you wrote yourself.

1. Build a small set of phrases

Choose one situation, such as ordering food or introducing yourself. In the set editor, set Front Language to the language you are studying and Back Language to the language you want for explanations.

Write short, specific phrases in Term. Include enough context in the term or definition to make the intended meaning clear. Begin with a few cards so that you can inspect every answer and test the audio before expanding the deck.

2. Translate, then decide what the answer should say

Use the card's Translate action in List, Grid, or Spreadsheet view. Confirm From and To, generate a draft, and edit Suggested translation before selecting Use translation or Replace answer.

For instance, a term such as “bank” needs context. “I am going to the bank to withdraw money” tells the model more about your intended meaning. You may then shorten the answer into the definition you actually want to study.

Check unfamiliar translations with a trusted reference. Preserve useful explanations already in the definition before choosing Replace answer. Finish by selecting Save cards.

M2M100 supports 100 languages and up to 1,200 input characters per request. It does not support Telugu. See the translation guide for the complete review-and-apply flow.

3. Check speech separately

In Settings → Text-to-Speech, enable speech and choose a Speech engine. If MOSS is downloaded, select it and try Listen to sample. Choose Female voice or Male voice according to your preference.

Then check a short card from your own deck. Confirm the front and back language settings, listen to the wording, and make sure the audio plays through the intended output.

MOSS covers 19 languages, fewer than translation. A language outside its coverage uses an installed device voice. Downloading a translation model does not supply a speech voice for that language. See the voice-language list before planning a listening session.

Allow time for first model use and new text, especially in Firefox. MOSS reuses its voice setup and saves generated audio locally for replay, including after a reload. In Audio Review, it also prepares one upcoming utterance. The cache is bounded to 64 MB; Remove download also clears saved audio. Older or new audio may still need preparation.

4. Give each review session a clear purpose

Use Flashcards when you want to attempt a meaning before revealing the answer. Use Writing when you want to type the answer. Choose Audio Review, then Play, for a continuous question → answer → next-card sequence. It skips textless sides and cards and does not reveal or grade answers. Select a 2- or 5-second Pause between sides if you want time to attempt a meaning before hearing the answer. Use Pause, Previous card, Next card, or the card slider to control the sequence; Repeat deck repeats it.

If you want the other language as the prompt, turn on Reverse Review in Settings. This changes review direction without rewriting the card. Turn it off when returning to the original direction.

Use Minimize player to keep listening through the mini-player while navigating within the app. Keep the browser tab open; playback is not promised after closing it or when the computer sleeps. See the Audio Review controls for speed and playback options.

Keep a note of wording that feels unclear, then correct those cards in the editor. If an answer has several acceptable forms, make the card's intended answer explicit before using a typing exercise.

5. Keep downloads and deck access distinct

Installed engines can restart offline from their cached files, but this does not guarantee that the website and your decks will open offline. After an app runtime update, first use may need a connection to cache the updated runtime.

Model caches belong to the browser profile where they were installed. Switching browsers does not transfer a download. Clearing site data can remove your local app data as well as the model cache; use the model's Remove download control when you only want to remove a pack.
