Start learning Turkish today:
Spoken by over 85 million native speakers in Türkiye, Cyprus, and vibrant communities across Europe, Turkish (Türkçe) is the bridge between Europe and Asia—from the historic streets of Istanbul (İstanbul) and Ankara to the Mediterranean coast of Antalya and İzmir.
For English speakers, Turkish offers three delightful surprises right from Day 1:
- 100% Phonetic Latin Alphabet: Introduced in 1928, the 29-letter Turkish alphabet has a strict one-letter, one-sound rule. There are zero silent letters and zero unpredictable spelling rules.
- Zero Grammatical Gender & Zero Definite Articles: Turkish has no der/die/das, no el/la, and no he/she/it distinction! A single pronoun—o—means he, she, and it. You never have to memorize arbitrary noun genders!
- Lego-Like Mathematical Regularity: Turkish is an agglutinative language governed by Vowel Harmony (Ünlü Uyumu). Instead of dozens of irregular verb conjugations and prepositions, Turkish attaches predictable, musical suffixes to the end of a root word—with only one irregular verb in the entire language (imek / to be)!
When you master the 480 most important everyday Turkish root words and phrases across 15 thematic flashcard decks (32 cards per deck)—seeing each root word both on its own and inside a natural example sentence with real suffixes—you unlock the ability to build thousands of Turkish expressions effortlessly.
5 Foundational Keys to Turkish Pronunciation, Vowel Harmony & Suffixes
1. The 29-Letter Turkish Phonetic Alphabet (ç, ş, c, j, ğ, ı, İ, ö, ü)
Every letter in Turkish is pronounced the same way every single time. Pay special attention to these 7 distinctive letters:
| Turkish Letter | Exact Sound | High-Frequency Flashcard Examples |
|---|---|---|
c / C |
Pronounced like English j in jam ([dʒ]) |
cam (glass), cuma (Friday), cevap (answer), cep (pocket) |
ç / Ç |
Pronounced like English ch in chair ([tʃ]) |
çay (tea), çorba (soup), çocuk (child), üç (three), çiçek (flower) |
ş / Ş |
Pronounced like English sh in ship ([ʃ]) |
teşekkürler (thank you), şeker (sugar), şehir (city), güneş (sun), kardeş (sibling) |
ğ / Ğ (yumuşak g) |
Soft g: Never starts a word; lengthens the preceding vowel or creates a smooth glide ([ː] / [j]) |
sağ (sah = right), yağmur (yah-moor = rain), öğretmen (uh-ret-men = teacher), dağ (dah = mountain) |
ı / I (dotless ı) |
Unrounded back vowel ([ɯ])—say ee ([i]) while keeping your lips relaxed and unsmiling |
sıcak (hot), kadın (woman), kapı (door), altı (six), kahvaltı (breakfast), balık (fish) |
i / İ (dotted i) |
Crisp ee as in meet ([i]) — note that capital dotted İ keeps its dot (İstanbul, İyi)! |
iyi (good), iki (two), isim (name), kedi (cat), deniz (sea), bilet (ticket) |
ö / Ö & ü / Ü |
Front rounded vowels ([ø] & [y]), like German ö / ü or French eu / u |
dört (four), göz (eye), göl (lake) — üç (three), süt (milk), gün (day), üzüm (grape) |
2. Turkish Vowel Harmony (Ünlü Uyumu): The 2-Way & 4-Way Rules
Turkish divides its 8 vowels into two harmonious teams based on where the tongue sits:
- 4 Back Vowels (Kalın Ünlüler):
a, ı, o, u - 4 Front Vowels (İnce Ünlüler):
e, i, ö, ü
Whenever you add a suffix to a Turkish word, you look at the last vowel of the root word so the suffix flows smoothly without your tongue jumping back and forth:
-
2-Way Vowel Harmony (
e-type suffixes:-lar/-ler,-da/-de,-dan/-den,-mak/-mek):- Last vowel is Back (
a, ı, o, u) → suffix usesa:- Plural
-lar: kitap → kitaplar (books), çocuk → çocuklar (children), masa → masalar (tables). - Locative
-da / -ta("in / on / at"): okulda (at school), odada (in the room), mutfakta (in the kitchen). - Infinitive
-mak: almak (to buy/take), okumak (to read), uyumak (to sleep).
- Plural
- Last vowel is Front (
e, i, ö, ü) → suffix usese:- Plural
-ler: ev → evler (houses), kedi → kediler (cats), gün → günler (days). - Locative
-de / -te: evde (at home), şehirde (in the city), işte (at work). - Infinitive
-mek: gelmek (to come), gitmek (to go), yüzmek (to swim).
- Plural
- Last vowel is Back (
-
4-Way Vowel Harmony (
i-type suffixes:-ı / -i / -u / -ü, question particlemı / mi / mu / mü):- Last vowel
aorı→ı(kapıyı, sıcak mı?) - Last vowel
eori→i(evi, iyi mi?) - Last vowel
ooru→u(okulu, uyudun mu?) - Last vowel
öorü→ü(sütü, gördün mü?)
- Last vowel
3. Agglutinative Suffix Building (How 1 Word Equals a Whole Phrase)
Instead of prepositions like in, from, to, my, your, Turkish stacks suffixes at the end of the noun in a fixed order (Root + Plural + Possessive + Case):
- ev = house / home
- evler = houses (
-lerplural) - evlerimiz = our houses (
-imiz= our) - evlerimizde = in our houses (
-de= in/at) - evlerimizden = from our houses (
-den= from)
(Tip: Also watch for consonant softening when a vowel suffix attaches to a root ending in p, ç, t, k → b, c, d, ğ: kitap → kitabım [my book], köpek → köpeğim [my dog], gitmek → gidiyorum [I am going]!)
4. Zero Grammatical Gender & Subject–Object–Verb (SOV) Word Order
- No Gender Anywhere: O bir doktor means "He is a doctor" or "She is a doctor." Arkadaş means both male friend and female friend.
- SOV Sentence Structure (Verb at the End): In Turkish, the conjugated verb always anchors the very end of the sentence, while time and place usually come near the beginning:
- Ben her sabah sıcak kahve içerim (Literally: "I every morning hot coffee drink").
- Annem hastanede çalışıyor (Literally: "My-mother hospital-in works").
5. Official Exam Prep: TÖMER & Yunus Emre Enstitüsü TYS (Türkçe Yeterlik Sınavı)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Learning Turkish Vocabulary
Why is Turkish grammar considered so regular once you learn vowel harmony?
Because Turkish has zero grammatical gender, zero irregular noun plurals, and only one irregular verb stem! Once your ear gets used to 2-way vowel harmony (a/e) and 4-way vowel harmony (ı/i/u/ü) across the example sentences in these 15 decks, you can attach plural, possessive, case, and tense suffixes to any new Turkish word with mathematical precision.
What is the difference between dotted i / İ and dotless ı / I in Turkish?
In Turkish, i (capital İ) and ı (capital I) are two completely separate letters! Dotted i / İ is a front vowel pronounced like ee in meet (iyi, iki, İstanbul), while dotless ı / I is a back unrounded vowel (sıcak, kadın, kapı, Iğdır). Because one is a front vowel and the other is a back vowel, they trigger different vowel-harmony suffixes (kedide vs. kapıda).
How many Turkish words do I need for A2 and B1/B2 (TÖMER / TYS)?
Because every Turkish root word generates dozens of suffixed forms (ev → evde, evden, eve, evim, evimiz), mastering the 480 high-frequency root words and verbs across these 15 decks gives you the equivalent functional vocabulary of over 2,000 inflected word forms—covering the full A1–A2 core and the everyday B1 foundation for TÖMER and TYS exams.
